MLB-Mets, yankees
NFL-Buffalo Bills (NYGiants and NY Jets play in NJ)
NBA- NY Knicks (NJ nets play next to Gints and Jets)
NHL- NY Rangers, NY Islanders, Buffalo Sabres (NJ Devils play with Nets)
MLS- none (NY/NJ metrostars play with Gints and Jets)
WNBA- NY Liberty
AFL-New York Dragons
Adirondack Icehawks (UHL) - Glens Falls
Adirondack Lumberjacks (NEBL) - Glens Falls
Albany River Rats (AHL) (Devils) - Albany
Auburn Doubledays (A) (Blue Jays) - Auburn
Batavia Muck Dogs (A) (Phillies)- Batavia
Binghamton Mets (AA) (Mets)- Binghamton
Binghamton Senators (AHL) (Ottawa Senators)
Brooklyn Cyclones (A) (Mets)
Buffalo Bisons (IL-AAA) (Cleveland) - Buffalo
Buffalo Blizzard (NPSL) - Buffalo
Elmira Pioneers (NLB) (Independent)- Elmira
Hudson Valley Renegades (A) (Devil Rays)- Fishkill
Long Island Ducks (ALPBC) (Independent)- Long Island
Long Island Rough Riders (USL) - Long Island
Oneonta Tigers (A) (Tigers)
Rochester Americans (AHL) (Buffalo Sabres)- Rochester
Rochester Red Wings (IL-AAA) (Twins) - Rochester
Rochester Raging Rhinos (USL) - Rochester
Staten Island Yankees (A)
Syracuse Crunch (AHL) (Columbus Blue Jackets)- Syracuse
Syracuse Salty Dogs (USL) - Syracuse
Syracuse SkyChiefs (IL-AAA) (Blue Jays) - Syracuse
Tri-City ValleyCats (A) (Astros)

Currently no Beach Volleyball teams, but there are leagues in the city, just not professional. I am sure it is not a complete list but close.
Totals: 32 teams that play in NY + 5 teams that play in East Rutherford, NJ (Giants, Jets, Metrostars, Devils, and Nets) less than 10 miles from NYC. therefore 37 teams but only 35 if using NY names.

is there a rumor circulating that Pedro Martinez, from the Red Sox, is coming to the Mets?? I think I heard that on the radio this morning but I wasn't really listening...
michaelg wrote on Nov 30, '04
They made him an offer. He didn't accept yet and I hope he doesn't.

Interesting... care to elaborate why? Sure, he's not the best clubhouse presence, but he's putting together a career that's almost second to none. His current stats compare very favorably to Sandy Koufax's career stats, and if you take into account the fact that this is undeniably a hitter's era the likes of which we've never seen before, his numbers are even more impressive.

First, for the last 10 years or so the Mets have over-spent picking up high profile but on-the-decline free agents that busted. Eddie Murray. Mo Vaughan. Tom Glavine. Roberto Alomar. Regardless of how great or good Martinez still is, I'd much rather the Mets spend more reasonable money on players that haven't yet reached their pinnacle, or premium money for players that are at it. The Mets, are not the Yankees. When the Yankees pick up some expensive free agent the player gets a new life and excels. When the Mets do, the player does horribly. Add Roger Cedeno and Jeremy Burnitz to the list. If the Yankees get Martinez, he'll win 15-20 games including all his games against the Red Sox. If the Mets do, he'll lose 15-20 games including all his games against the Yankees, then get hurt, and his salary will prevent them from signing somebody like David Wright (Met rookie this year) in two years.

Second, I hate free agency. I hate the concept of buying a championship by acquiring a bunch of free agents that I personally haven't yet developed any interest at an individual level of being a fan of. When the '86 Mets won, they won with a team that included players I've watched grow up for many years. This list included Mookie Wilson, Wally Backman, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Jesse Orosco. I watched Mookie and Jesse lose close to a million games in the late 70's and early 80's before they won. Kevin Mitchell and Lenny Dykstra were rookies that year. And Keith Hernandez came aboard in '83 via a trade of Neil Allen...who was a rookie with the Mets in '79. Gary Carter came aboard in '84 via a trade of Hubie Brooks...a fan favorite who was a rookie with the Mets too in ''80. The team was built, not bought. I knew the players and was a fan not just of the Mets...but of the players themselves.

While I'll of course root for the Mets no matter who is playing, I find being a fan more enjoyable and satisfying when I'm rooting for "Mets" and not just "the Mets". I'm not saying all 9 players need to be lifelong Mets. But it terrible when from season to season the whole lineup changes. I'd rather the Mets re-sign Al Leiter, a Met for 7 years and one of my favorites, for a few more years, than Pedro. He'll come at 1/2 or 1/3 the price and probably perform just as well since there won't be the pressure of coming to a new team in NY.
